A hillside named after a police guard
Vidigal takes its name from Miguel Nunes Vidigal, a guard of the royal police in the 19th century who was given the land, as the Rio city magazine Diário do Rio recounts. The community grew after Avenida Niemeyer was built along the cliffs in 1922 and again when Leblon and Ipanema expanded in the 1960s. In 1968 residents went to court when a hotel tried to claim the beach below for its own guests, and they won.
A theatre company and a steep street
The theatre group Nós do Morro was founded in Vidigal in 1986, according to the same article. If theatre interests you, ask your guide about it. The favela is built on a steep slope, and the longer tours continue up to the start of the Two Brothers trail; expect steep streets and steps on every tour.
Short walk or long day
Carioca Tours with Nat runs the shortest tour on this site, about an hour and a half in Vidigal without the climb, and its listing mentions hotel pickup. Urban Jungle and Nattrip Brasil take four and a half and five hours and add the hike; both offer hotel pickup as an option when you book. If you are short on time or not keen on a steep mountain path, the short walk is the obvious choice.
Vidigal and the April 2026 operation
On 20 April 2026 a police operation in Vidigal left about 200 hikers waiting on the summit of Morro Dois Irmãos until the area was partly secured. The tours on this page cross the same streets. What happened that morning is described in detail on the hike page, and the official advice of the US, UK and German governments is summarised at the top of this page.
